2010 Ship's Log to North Channel / Benjamin Island group

Our cruise this year included 2 other boats from the Thames River Yacht Club.  Fred & Lori aboard "Free Spirit" a CS 36 who traveled north with us, and Paul who single handed his Tayana 37 " MZ Tumbleweed" that we met up with on Fitzwilliam Island.

TRYC to Sarnia

55 miles

We left TRYC at about 9 am on a beautiful warm and sunny day, what a change from last year, maybe a good omen?  By 1:40 we where at the Walpole Is ferry.  Passed Fawn Is at 2:45 pm.

7:10 pm and we are tied up at Bridgeview marina in Sarnia.

Sarnia to Kincardine

80.5 miles

 6 am           Left Sarnia at  and motored North toward Kincardine.  Little to no wind,

 1:30 pm     we are about 15 miles west of Goderich and motoring

3:30pm       Sky is looking dark but missing us.

7:30            Docked at Kincardine.  Walked over the bridge and found a restaurant.

Kincardine to Rattlesnake harbour

89 miles

6:30 am      Depart Kincardine,  no wind, motoring

11:00 am    We are about 30 miles from Cape Hurd, no wind.

9:00            Entered Rattlesnake harbour which is on the NE side of Fitzwilliam Island where we joined up with MZ Tumbleweed.  Paul had left a few days earlier.

Rattlesnake harbour to Heywood Island

34 miles

11:30         Anchor up....I'm lovin my new windlass  :-)   We all enjoyed our first communal breakfast, vacation has begun.

5:00 pm     Anchored in the bay at Heywood island, our first really beautiful north channel anchorage.   The crew's of Freedom and MZ Tumbleweed have never been in this area before and are having a wow moment

                 We played and explored in the dinghy's and took may photos of the sunset.

Heywood Is  to Little Current

8.1 miles

9:30      Anchor up, Motoring to Little Current under blue skies and no wind.

11:30    Arrived at the bridge and did circles for 30 minutes waiting for it to open.

12:05    Docked at Walley's for fuel and pump out.  Then moved to the city docks for the night.  Free WIFI  whahooo!

             Paul treated us to Fish&Chips on the dock.  We walked to the grocery store, and acted like tourists.

Little Current to Croker Is

20.6 miles

10:15      Left Little Current  gusty winds today from the west.  We are taking the route on the north side of Amedoz Is.  We are getting the sails wet today.

12:00     Wind is picking up and the sky is looking kinda dark.

1:00       We ducked into the bay on the north side of Amedroz island to wait out the storm.

2:30       Left Amedroz for Croker Is.

4:pm      Anchored in the inner harbour of Croker Is.  We have the place almost all to ourselves.

Croker Is to Little Current

16.5 miles

7:00 am    We are getting a early start today and heading towards Little Current passing on the south side of Amedroz Is.  Clear sky, sunny and warm, no wind.

10:00 am   Tied up at the Little Current town docks.

Little Current to Baie Fine

19 miles

9:00 am        Motored out of Little Current towards Baie Fine ,  nice day,  no wind, 

While Baie Fine is beautiful, the distance back to the pool is a long way unless you can spend a few days.  Maybe next time we will have time to explore better.

Baie Fine to Covered Portage Cove

20 miles

9: 00 am  Anchor up and motoring on flat water under sunny skies.  Anchored in Covered Portage Cove but Free Spirit and Mz Tumbleweed opted to not chance a grounding and anchored in the outer harbour.

 Covered Portage Cove to Tobermory

48 miles

8:00 am  Motored out and past Kilarney and hoisted sail for Tobermory...wind cooperated and we sailed   :-)  in fact we really sailed....  tied up at the pump out dock at 4:10 pm

Tobermory to Kincardine

70 miles

8:00 am  left the docks under grey skies and it looked like rain all day but we got lucky.
July 24, 2010 Kincardine to Sarnia 81 miles
We spent yesterday weathered in at Kincardine, but today things are calmer,  but still grey skies, light rain at times.  motoring a easy 5.5 knots.
July 25, 2010 Sarnia YC to TRYC 55 miles
The trip is ending and there is a urge to head North and not down river and home.  Two weeks is ok but next year 3 would be nice.
